    Proposal abstract:

Community CROPS is creating a Young Farmers Program to expand our efforts in helping people grow their own food. With current funding to construct a hoop house, raised beds, and a mini student-run farmers’ market at Mickle Middle School, we are searching for additional funds to strengthen and build upon this initial endeavor and expand to create new youth growing projects.

The funds requested in this grant will allow our project coordinator to commit more quality time and energy to CROPS’ project at Mickle. In addition, CROPS will be able to seek out new opportunities to encourage and educate youth growing. This includes organizing “farm school” at CROPS’ community farm. Working with youth participants at Lincoln’s community centers, we will arrange field trips to the farm to learn about growing first-hand. There will be indoor and outdoor educational materials located on-site, and hands-on projects to get kids excited about the ins and outs of farming, food, and health.

We will also work with other schools and after-school programs, consulting and helping create youth garden programs. If available hours still exist, the remaining time will be dedicated to searching for and writing additional grant proposals for increased funding of the program.
